Naomi Dean was awarded Young Furniture Designer of the Year in 2005 for her innovative compact wardrobe design, a piece that had already won two prestigious design awards at Londons New Designers Exhibition in 2004. Naomi has a BA (Hons) in Product and Furniture Design from De Montfort University in Leicester, a course focused on design for production.
Naomi has exhibited at trade shows in London, Dubai and Milan and has attracted a large amount of media attention. 'The Wardrobe by N.J. Dean' has been included in the book 'Cool Hunting' a guide to high design and innovation by Dave Evans which is published across Europe, the US and Australia. Naomi started her career working with London based design consultancy Volume, working on a range of domestic furniture briefs. A dining range she designed whilst at Volume was launched at The 2006 Furniture Show at the NEC.
Naomi has been working in house for furniture manufacturer and retailer Harvey Jones since March 2005. The Arts and Crafts movement was the inspiration for her first kitchen range which incorporates traditional wood jointing techniques, bespoke cabinet handles and dining furniture. Naomi manages each project from initial research right through to production, liasing with the creative director and manufacturing team. Naomi designs new furniture and products to expand the existing catalogue, creating added value and where appropriate improving the manufacturing process by designing products that can be produced in batches and used across all ranges produced by Harvey Jones.
Working on a freelance project with a London hotel allowed Naomi to work on a range of bedroom furniture that was in keeping with the
Georgian
style of the building while bringing the hotel up to date with innovative use of space and storage.
'The Wardrobe by N.J. Dean' is a piece inspired by Naomi's passion for creating furniture that offers more to the user than expected. She has taken the usual conceptions of storing clothing and twisted them to offer a new way of storing and accessing your belongings. With a large volume of commercial interest while exhibiting she decided to build upon this project and develop a range of bedroom furniture to accompany the wardrobe. She is liasing with manufacturers and retailers to bring the range to market.
Naomi is currently working with Green-Works a social enterprise that recycles office furniture and remanufactures new furniture from reclaimed desktops and cabinets.
Naomi is a member of Hidden Art, The Eco Design Network and is involved with Green Growth London.
